To figure out how to properly ride a snowboard, for a start it is worthwhile to properly see and measure it. Find out its total length, the distance between the contact points and the distance from the center to the embeds (holes for fasteners). These values will help you determine the look of a given board.

Instructions

Step 1

You can identify the nose (the front end of the snowboard) and the tail of the snowboard by some characteristic features. Take a close look at the shape of the board, compare the width and length of the rounded ends.

Step 2

Freeride boards are suitable for beginners. They are versatile as they are designed to glide well on medium thick snow. These models feature a wider nose and narrower tail, and a softer design from the front attachment to the tip of the nose. This shape allows the board to float well in the virgin soil and, thanks to the narrowed tail, develop good speed. But such boards are not very common in Russia. Mixed and freestyle boards with a more symmetrical shape are more popular here. The boards, which are not visually symmetrical, are intended to be rolled in a given direction. In this type of snowboard, the nose is usually more elongated.

Step 3

If you cannot visually distinguish the nose and tail, look at the snowboard from the side. As a rule, the nose has a large upward curvature. This is done for a higher speed. The tail usually has a flatter curve than the nose.

Step 4

Carefully measure the distance from the center of the snowboard to the bindings (blind holes in the board for attaching bindings). In all universal and freeride models, the holes for the bindings are shifted towards the tail by 25-35mm. Very often this turns out to be the main distinguishing feature of the nose and tail of the snowboard.

Step 5

On some models, especially for technical freestyle, none of the listed signs can be found. These are twin-tip boards, they are the same in width, shape and stiffness of the tail and nose, and the mounts are located strictly in the center. These boards are suitable for riding in both directions and for people with both left and right leading feet.
