The first issue of the newspaper is dated July 20, 1924. Until March 19, 1946 it was called "Red Sport". Since 1934, the publication has been translated into a daily format. The first editor-in-chief of the newspaper - Aron Itin

In July 1949, the first poem by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, entitled “Two Sports”, was published on the pages of Sovetsky Sport. The poem was dedicated to the fact that "capitalists compete for money, and Soviet people - for the soul."

Since May 1960, a Sunday supplement to the newspaper, Football, has been published. On December 3, 1967 it was renamed Football Hockey. On July 5, 1968, the readers of the sports newspaper received another supplement - the all-Union chess and checkers weekly "64".

At the turn of the century, in the 1990s and 2000s, Sovetsky Sport was going through a creative and financial crisis - the number of circulations decreased, and journalists and correspondents began to leave the publication en masse. In August 1991, the edition did not appear for a week. At the same time, 14 journalists who left the newspaper "Soviet Sport" founded a separate sports publication "Sport-Express".

In 1998, the daily newspaper, owned by the Moskovskaya Nedvizhimost company, was published only twice a week. A year later, with the arrival of the editor-in-chief Alexander Kozlov, the newspaper's editorial office resumed its daily work. Under the leadership of Kozlov, the newspaper switched from the A2 format to the so-called "tabloid" format, developed together with Scottish specialists and still in use today. With the direct participation of "Soviet Sport" in the fall of 2003, the sports magazine "PROsport" was founded and launched, which later became an independent publication.

Alexander Kozlov also calls the creation of a public sports channel a real victory for his editorial staff. It was a clearly planned action - in 2002, at the time when the competition for the sixth meter frequency was being held, the newspaper "Soviet Sport" organized a reader's referendum "A TV stadium in every home!" There were also telephone conferences on this issue - the topic of the need for sports broadcasting in the country was touched upon from issue to issue. It all ended with the creation in June 2003 of the public television channel "Sport".

On April 15, 1999, the first issue of the Sovetsky Sport-Football weekly was published. According to the then editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Alexander Kozlov, this publication was a kind of response to the football supplement to Sport-Express, as well as the color weekly magazine Sport-Express-Football, which will cease to exist two years later. By the beginning of the 2000s, the circulation of "Soviet Sport-Football" reached 230 thousand copies.

In August 2001, the Moscow Real Estate company sold Sovetsky Sport to the Prof-Media holding. Along with Komsomolskaya Pravda and Express Newspaper, Sovetsky Sport entered the Prof-Media publishing house. In March 2007, Prof-Media sold a stake in this publishing house to the ESN group of companies. After passing under the control of Prof-Media, the newspaper began to publish more entertainment materials on sports related topics, and since December 2001, a TV program has been published at the end of each issue (since 2003, only sports channels). There was a division of newspaper issues into Moscow and regional (Arkhangelsk, Ufa, etc.).

At the end of 2003, the well-known journalist Igor Kots was appointed editor-in-chief of the newspaper. For almost ten years of work in "Soviet Sport", Kots, according to his own statement, "made from an unprofitable, agonizing newspaper, which was going to be sold and closed, the main sports publication in Russia." In addition, from this period, all employees of the newspaper began to appear in public and go to work only in clothes with the symbols of the newspaper - red shirts with the logo of "Soviet Sport".

Since June 2006, the newspaper has been published in color (before that, only the Soviet Sport-Football issue was published in color. In 2007-2016, the newspaper Sovetsky Sport was published by the Komsomolskaya Pravda Publishing House.

In July 2009, the newspaper celebrated the 85th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of the newspaper.

On May 20, 2013, the 19000th issue of the newspaper was published.

In January 2016, information appeared that the publishing house "Komsomolskaya Pravda" was going to sell the unprofitable "Soviet Sport" to another owner - the communication agency of Sergei Kolushev. On February 11, the newspaper changed its owner and editor-in-chief, the website, the newspaper and all its supplements were sold. The new editor-in-chief instead of Pavel Sadkov was Konstantin Kleschev, who had previously worked for the Sport-Express newspaper. As a result, since February 2016, First Media Invest and Sergey Kolushev have been the owner of the Sovetsky Sport Publishing House.

On November 2, 2016, the 20,000th issue of the newspaper was released.

Sovetsky Sport Publishing House today is not only a newspaper, but also an informational multimedia portal www.sovsport.ru, Internet TV and mobile applications, the weekly Sovetsky Sport-Football, Sovetsky Sport-Hockey and Sovetsky Sport Weekend (preparing to leave).

The daily newspaper is published in the following cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Krasnodar, Khabarovsk. The weekly "Soviet Sport - Football" is published in Moscow, and from there it is delivered to 40 different cities throughout the country and in the near abroad.

The recommended price for a daily paper issue is 25 rubles.

Special projects

A distinctive feature of "Soviet Sport" is the constant support of feedback - from the readers of the newspaper and the website. Famous athletes and coaches are periodically invited to the so-called "Direct Line" to the editorial office, who answer questions from readers on the air. On October 19, 2012, the project “Narodnaya Gazeta” was launched on the website of the publication, where users of the portal leave their notes, and the best materials go to the strip of the same name of the daily newspaper.

Every year the newspaper organizes various actions, the most famous of which is "Kharlamov Trophy".
