If the brake pads of disc brakes on a bicycle, moped or motorcycle become heavily soiled, this leads to a significant drop in braking performance. It is important to know that if an oil-containing liquid enters the disc, the brakes may stop working altogether. In this case, all that remains is to buy new pads. As a rule, the pads have not yet had time to wear out. Therefore, they must be properly cleaned from contamination.

It is necessary

  • - gas cutter;
  • - matter without fibers;
  • - solvent;
  • - standard set of tools.

Instructions

Step 1

Disassemble the brake machine, remove the pads and wipe off any visible dirt from the pads. If a layer of oily dirt is found on the pads, this will confirm the assumption that oil has entered the pads. In addition to oil, pads can be contaminated with road reagents or a mixture of various contaminants.

Step 2

The first step is to wipe the pads with a solvent such as "Acetone" or "Thinner 646". It is not advisable to use solvents such as "White spirit" or ordinary kerosene. These substances do not have sufficient activity and do not dissolve such contaminants particularly well. Ordinary brake fluid such as DOT or gasoline can also be used for wiping. After that, the pads must be dried.

Step 3

Unfortunately, simple wiping won't be enough. After all, brake pads, like a sponge, absorb all the dirt and therefore it will not be possible to easily wash off the dirt.

Step 4

To clean the pads, we will use a conventional gas burner (or gas cutter) with a can of household gas. Take a cleaned and dried block with pliers and ignite it on a burner flame. The block should be brought to red heat. At this temperature, all oil-containing impurities will burn out or boil away, and other impurities will turn into easily washable dust. Burnout control must be carried out visually. The oily dirt will be seen to flare up and ignite producing white smoke.

Step 5

After annealing the pads, do not cool them quickly. The cooling process should take place in air without the use of water or other media. After cooling, the pads must be wiped with a dry and clean cloth.
