A mouthguard is a special pad on the teeth that is used to protect against injury in various sports. This tool allows you to protect the athlete from many serious injuries such as concussion, soft tissue contusion, jaw fracture, etc. The choice of mouthguards must be approached very carefully. There are three types of mouth guards: thermoplastic, standard and custom. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Instructions
Step 1
Almost all mouthguards sold in sports stores are standard. They are made on the basis of the average facial features of a certain group of people. Such mouth guards are the least safe and are not recommended by physicians for use.
Step 2
Thermoplastic mouthguards have higher protective characteristics. They are made of a special material that allows the mouthguard to be tailored to a specific person. If you put such a mouthpiece in hot water, it becomes viscous. Due to this, it can be given the necessary shape by pressing it against the teeth of the upper jaw.
Step 3
Individual mouthguards are considered the safest. They are made to order in specialized laboratories or dental offices. Individual mouthguards fit perfectly to the athlete's jaw and are as comfortable as possible. Their main disadvantage is their high cost.
