The Haas racer told why, in his opinion, Lewis Hamilton made the controversial, as it seemed then, decision to leave McLaren in 2012.
Lewis Hamilton, five-time world champion, won his first title back in 2008, when he played for McLaren.
After the 2012 season, Hamilton left McLaren and moved to Mercedes. Then many people questioned the advisability of such a decision of the Briton, because he left the team that won the races and moved to a new team, the future of which at that time was still rather vague.
However, in the end it turned out that Hamilton was right: he took four more titles with Mercedes, and McLaren, after the departure of Lewis, still has not won a single race.
Kevin Magnussen, who made his Formula 1 debut in 2014 with McLaren, explained why, in his opinion, Hamilton decided to move to Mercedes.
Magnussen said: “McLaren expects certain behaviors from us as drivers.
They, so to speak, "create" the pilots. Lewis Hamilton was a prime example of a driver who couldn't express himself in McLaren. Lewis's freedom was taken away.
Sometimes racers can be compared to musicians, actors. They need room to perform well. It will be very difficult if you put on a rider a label that he is not allowed to remove."
Magnussen, now for Haas, was glad that he was not associated with McLaren.
“Of course, I sometimes miss the people I worked with at McLaren. I can't complain about the time I spent there.
But it's good for my personal growth that I'm no longer on the wrong team."
