The ability to assemble a wheel yourself and fix the figure eight is a useful skill that will not only save you a lot on bike maintenance, but also give you confidence in the quality of the work done. At first glance, it seems that it is almost impossible to assemble a wheel on your own, but in reality this is not at all the case. The assembly technique is very simple and it is enough to understand its basic meaning.

  • - knitting needles;
  • - a machine for assembling a wheel or just a free fork.

Instructions

Step 1

Take a bicycle hub and select a rim that matches the number of holes in the hub flange.

Step 2

Buy a set of knitting needles with a small margin. The size of the spokes must be selected using a special wheel calculator. This program can be found freely on the Internet. If your experience allows you to determine the required size of the knitting needles by eye, then you can do it yourself. You can choose the modification of the spokes arbitrarily.

Step 3

Pass through the holes on one of the spoke hub flanges through one hole. With this action we will start assembling the wheel. Fasten the opposite ends of the spokes into the holes on the rim. Do not tighten the nipple nuts firmly, just tighten them. Select the first hole on the rim where you will place the spoke at random. Place the next knitting needles on the basis of the principle through three holes into the fourth.

Step 4

Now, in the remaining holes (through one, respectively) of the bushings of this flange, the spokes should be threaded with the heads in the opposite direction (relative to the spokes already placed). The reverse side of the spoke should be placed in the rim and the nuts should also be carefully screwed on. The first spoke is placed in the tenth hole, nine from the spoke placed in step 3. After that, use the same principle. Place the needles in the fourth hole every three. Note that the knitting needles must be intertwined three times. Starting from the hub flange, the spoke fits under the opposing spoke, then also falls under the second spoke and as a result intercepts the third spoke from above.

Step 5

After that, turn the wheel over. Let's assemble the opposite flange in the same way as in step 3 and 4. Place the first knitting needle randomly. It is optimal to choose the co-directional holes of the opposite flanges and place the spokes side by side. Use the principle that each hole should "pull the rim" in opposite directions.

Step 6

Now you need to straighten the figure eight on the wheel and eliminate the beating. Rotate the wheel in a frame with a marker or a special machine. At those points where you see a deviation from a uniform position, you need to loosen the knitting needle or tighten it.

Step 7

If the wheel is protruding towards the marker located, then the spoke next to this area must be tightened. If on the contrary, then the spoke should be loosened. Remember to keep the tension on all spokes evenly and do not loosen / tighten only one spoke. Radial runout is eliminated in the same way as this method.
