There are only a few months left before the Winter Olympic Games will open in the Russian resort town of Sochi on the Black Sea coast. Hosting sports on such a grand scale is not an easy task. Therefore, quite natural questions arise: whether the sports facilities are conveniently located in terms of accessibility, whether the transport problem has been solved, whether there are enough hotels to accommodate athletes and fans. How is the venue for the Winter Olympics arranged?
Where the sports will take place
For the competition, 2 clearly marked zones (clusters) have been allocated - the coastal one, located in the Adler region of Sochi on the territory of the Imeretinskaya lowland, and the mountain one, located in the area of the Krasnaya Polyana ski resort, about 40 kilometers from the city center. The coastal area includes the Fisht stadium, which can accommodate 40 thousand people, and a number of sports facilities designed for skating athletes, as well as for curling competitions. All these structures are within walking distance from each other, which is very convenient for spectators.
The Olympic Village is located in the immediate vicinity of the coastal zone. Members of national teams, as well as members of the International Olympic Committee will live in low-rise comfortable buildings, each of which is actually a small hotel with everything you need.
Competitions in biathlon, skiing, bobsleigh, luge, freestyle and snowboarding will be held in the mountainous area. Modern sports complexes have been built there: Rosa Khutor, Russkiye Gorki, Laura, Sanki. In addition, not far from Krasnaya Polyana, on the Psekhako ridge, a mountain Olympic village has been built for biathletes and skiers.
How Sochi's infrastructure has changed
Preparations for the Olympic Games required the construction of a number of new infrastructure facilities, as well as the modernization of existing ones. A new terminal building was built at the Sochi airport, and the runway was lengthened. A railway line was laid from Adler to Krasnaya Polyana, which will make it possible to reach the mountain sports zone in about 1 hour. At the same time, the Tuapse-Adler railway line was reconstructed, increasing its capacity.
A number of comfortable hotels were built to accommodate spectators. The organizers of the Games also solved the notorious Russian problem of bad roads by laying over 250 kilometers of new surfaces with convenient interchanges. In a word, the venue for the upcoming Winter Olympics has been arranged at a high level.
