Sochi received the right to host the XXII Winter Olympic Games in the fight against the Austrian Salzburg and South Korean Pyeongchang - only these three cities from the initial seven were included in the voting list. The final decision in favor of the Black Sea resort was made by the 119th session of the International Olympic Committee, which took place in 2007 in Guatemala.
The Winter Olympics flag is already kept in the Sochi Olympics Committee - in 2010 it was handed over to the future hosts at the closing ceremony of the previous games in Vancouver. This action was accompanied by a colorful presentation ceremony for the 2014 Sochi Sports Forum.
According to the plan of the organizing committee, the Olympic facilities of the XXII Winter Games will be divided into two "clusters" - mountain and coastal. The sports facilities of the first are planned to be located in Krasnaya Polyana - there will be competitions that require a significant difference in altitude (luge, ski, bobsleigh, snowboarding, ski jumping, etc.). Biathlon and cross-country skiing tracks will also be built in Krasnaya Polyana. In total, the mountain cluster will unite six sports facilities and a press complex - "media village".
Competitions on ice rinks will be held in the Black Sea coastal zone - Olympic tournaments in hockey, curling, figure skating and speed skating competitions. For this purpose, six sports facilities are planned to be used in Sochi and Adler. The opening and closing ceremonies are to take place at the 40,000-seat Fisht stadium, and an Olympic village is being built to house the athletes.
The schedule of the competition is already known. The first awards of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be raffled off on February 8 - skaters will compete for one set of awards on that day, and skiers will compete for four more - two in cross-country skiing and one each in freestyle and biathlon. On the same day, competitions in ski jumping, luge, hockey and figure skating will begin. The opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics will take place the day before, on February 7, 2014, and the closing ceremony is scheduled for February 23. On the day of the closing ceremony, the last awards will also be drawn - the hockey teams will play the final match, and the skiers will play the last race.
