The 2012 Ice Hockey World Championship was held in Helsinki and Stockholm from 4 to 20 May. In total, 64 matches were played in which 16 teams took part. The first place in the championship was taken by the Russian Federation, the second - by Slovakia, and the third - by the Czech Republic.
Instructions
Step 1
Before the championship, all 16 participating teams were divided into two groups with the code names H (from the name of the city of Helsinki) and S (from the name of the city of Stockholm). The first of these groups included the national teams of Canada, Finland, the USA, Switzerland, Slovakia, the Republic of Belarus, France and Kazakhstan, and the second - the Russian Federation, Sweden, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Latvia, Denmark and Italy. The event involved two large sports complexes: in Helsinki - Hartwall Arena, and in Stockholm - Globen Arena.
Step 2
During the preliminary stage, 28 games were played between the national teams of group H and the same number between the national teams of group S. As a result, eight teams reached the quarterfinals: Canada, Slovakia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Russian Federation, Norway, USA and Finland. The remaining eight teams did not participate in further competitions.
Step 3
In the quarterfinals, Canada played 3: 4 with Slovakia, Sweden with the Czech Republic - with the same score, the Russian Federation with Norway - 5: 2, and the USA with Finland - 2: 3. After that, the national teams of Canada, Sweden, Norway and the United States dropped out of the championship.
Step 4
In the semifinals, the Slovakian team defeated the Czech Republic with a score of 3: 1, and the Russian national team defeated the Finnish one with a score of 6: 2. As a result, Slovakia and the Russian Federation reached the final.
Step 5
The final of the championship took place on May 20. On the part of the Russian Federation, goals were scored by Alexander Valerievich Semin (at 09:57 and 35:22 minutes), Alexander Valerievich Peregozhin (26:10), Alexey Vladimirovich Tereshchenko (33:31), Pavel Valelyevich Datsyuk (43:55) and Evgeny Vladimirovich Malkin (58:02). On the Slovak side, both goals were scored by Zdeno Jara (01:06 and 49:37). Thus, with a score of 6: 2, the Russian national team became the winner of the tournament, and the Slovak national team took second place. A few hours earlier, the bronze match was held in the same city. Teams from the Czech Republic and Finland took part in it. The first of them scored 3 goals, and the second - 2. As a result, the third place went to the Czech national team.
