Step 1

You can learn basic walking and skiing skills on your own, without the help of a qualified trainer. To get started, learn the skills of the alternating two-step stroke. Choose a flat section of the track 20-50 m long. Leave the ski poles aside for now - you have to practice sliding alternately on one or the other leg without support with your hands.

Step 2

Accept the correct ski rack. Tilt your body forward slightly, bend your legs slightly at the knees.

Step 3

Push off with one leg and immediately shift your weight to the other leg. Straighten the pushing leg at the knee, and then relax. Pull your straightened leg back and transfer your body weight to it, while pushing off with the leg on which you previously performed the slide. Try to maintain balance by balancing your arms.

Step 4

After you have mastered the skill of alternating sliding, take the sticks. Put the loop of the ski pole on your wrist so that it is held and does not fly out when pushing. When pushing with the foot, the hand of the same name with a stick is brought forward and placed on the snow a little further than the toe of the boot. At the moment when the leg goes forward, the hand presses on the stick and makes a push back until it stops. Thus, in a two-step move, there is one push with a stick for each sliding step.

Step 5

At first, perform all movements at a slow pace, trying to achieve complete coordination of the elements of the stroke and synchronous work of the arms and legs. As you master the skill, gradually increase the pace of movement and range of motion.

Step 6

The duration of the first lesson should not exceed 40 minutes. To master a confident locomotion technique, you will need a few sessions. Over time, you will notice that you have become more confident on skis, your actions will become automatic and do not require constant control over the implementation of individual movements.
