The Olympic Games are an important event in the life of any country, and Russia is no exception, where the Winter Olympics are held in Sochi. But with all the positives of this event, it was not without scandals, and therefore you can often hear that a number of countries are ready to declare a boycott of the 2014 Olympics.
European countries
After the adoption of the law banning the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations, a number of officials of European countries, including Germany and England, said that such discrimination could cause public protest, since in the conditions of modern reality, the recognition of the gay movement is almost a generally accepted fact. Until now, no civilized country has put forward a boycott of the Olympic Games in Sochi, and all the talk is about the fact that those athletes who believe that this law in one way or another infringes on their rights or orientation may refuse to participate in the games. Among them is the fencer Imke Duplitzer, who is a representative of a movement promoting relations between women, and actively proposes to boycott sports in a camp that, in her opinion, infringes on the interests of sexual minorities.
Countries of the post-Soviet space
The possibility of participation of Georgian athletes in the 2014 Winter Olympics, as with this country, Russia has severed all diplomatic relations after the recognition of the last independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. But if we take into account the fact that the Olympic Games have long been out of wars and political conflicts, it is likely that Georgia will send its athletes to the Olympics, especially since there have been no official statements of refusal to participate from the authorities so far.
Other countries
Also interesting is the question of whether a boycott of the Sochi Olympics by the United States is possible, especially since the preconditions for this have arisen more than once. The very first of these was the conflict over the entry into Russia of a former employee of the American special services Edward Snowden. But since he left the territory of the Russian Federation, the question of how much the possibility of granting him political asylum will harm Russia's relations with the United States has lost its relevance. There were no official statements about the possibility of refusal to participate in the Sochi Olympics by the US authorities.
