Catching the ball is a skill required for team play. Having confidently mastered the ball on the run, the player can immediately move on to attack, subsequent transfer, dribble or throw. In games such as basketball or volleyball, before they catch the ball, the player already plans where and to whom he will pass it. The choice of the method of catching the ball depends on the position of the person in relation to the flying ball, the speed and height of the flight.

Instructions

Step 1

All methods of catching a ball combine three main phases: preparatory, main and final. The simplest and, most importantly, the most reliable way is to catch the ball with both hands at once.

Step 2

Preparatory phase

If the ball is flying towards you at head and chest level, extend your straight arms forward towards it. Tighten your fingers and hands, shape them into a basket, larger than the diameter of the ball. If the ball is flying below chest level, tilting the body slightly forward, sit down a little deeper, lowering the height of the shoulders to the level of reception of the ball. Lean forward towards the flying ball.

Step 3

Main phase

When receiving the ball, wrap your fingers around it, but not your palms, squeezing it between your hands. When catching the ball, bend your arms gently at the elbow joints. This will be a cushioning motion that dampens the force of the impact.

Step 4

Final phase

Having received the ball, hold it in your arms bent at the elbows, move your torso slightly forward. If necessary, the ball can be protected from being gripped by the elbows spread out to the side.

Step 5

To practice catching the ball correctly, use a simple exercise - throwing the ball on the floor or against a wall and catching after the bounce. These exercises will allow you to develop an "understanding" of the behavior of the ball, learn how to hold it correctly, control the position of your body, head and reaction. Another type of training is to catch the ball and then pass it in a pair while standing still, and then with a running partner.
