Step 1
Purchase or rent suitable sports equipment. For uphill climbing, cross-country skis are best. You can choose a special model best suited for skating. Usually such skis are shorter than usual by ten to twenty centimeters. Also choose an ointment that is suitable for the weather. This is important when crossing flat areas, but the lack of a suitable ointment is especially noticeable when going uphill.
Step 2
Learn to skate. It is best to train on a flat area with dense surface, for example, on a wide track. A narrow track will not work for this. This method of movement differs in that the skis themselves are not parallel to each other, but intersect with their back side at an angle. In this case, the weight is transferred alternately to one or the other leg. Sticks should also be actively used to increase speed.
Step 3
Try climbing a small hill using your skating skills. If you accelerated enough at the previous stage of the track, then you can continue to move in the way indicated above. If not, go up, rearranging the skis at an angle like in a skating course. In this case, you will not slide back, since the edge of the ski that you are rearranging will abut against the ski on the supporting leg.
Step 4
If you are unable to climb as described above, turn sideways and reposition your skis as if you were climbing up an uneven terrain with ledges, such as a staircase. Thus, you will also be protected from rolling back. This method will take longer than skating and is suitable for those who have just started skiing.
