Wimbledon is one of the four tennis Grand Slam tournaments that have existed since 1877 and are held annually in the London suburb of the same name. Every year the best tennis players of the planet compete with each other in order to receive the honorary title of the winner in the final.
In 2012, the tournament was traditionally held for 14 days, one and a half months before the first Monday in August. Tennis players competed for prizes in five varieties of Wimbledon: singles men, singles womens, doubles mens, doubles womens, mixed (mixed). In doubles and mixed tournaments, partners do not have to be residents of the same country, which is why these meetings are more popular with spectators.
Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska and American Serena Williams, whose name has long been heard by all tennis fans, reached the final of the Wimbledon 2012 women's singles tournament. The final match between the girls took place in two stages, as the first game had to be interrupted due to heavy rain after the first set, won by Williams with a score of 6: 1. The American won the match for the fifth time with a score of 6: 1 5: 7 6: 2.
The final of the men's tournament was more dramatic, as the six-time Wimbledon winner from Switzerland Roger Federer and the Scotsman Andy Murray (a favorite of the local audience), who was the second racket of the world and often took second or third places at the Wimbledon tournament, reached the final. Since British men had never won a tournament since 1938, high hopes were pinned on Murray. Nevertheless, Federer won a landslide victory and became the seven-time champion of Wimbledon, thus he repeated the record of tennis legend - American Pete Sampras. The score of the meeting is 4: 6, 7: 5, 6: 3, 6: 4.
The women's doubles tournament was quite predictable, as the Williams sisters (Serena and Venus) were the initial favorites. It was they who, having overcome all rivals on their way, reached the final, where they defeated the national team from the Czech Republic represented by Andrea Glavachkova and Lucy Gradetskaya. The final score of this Wimbledon tournament is 7: 5 6: 4.
The winners of the men's doubles tournament were the mixed team consisting of the representative of Great Britain Jonathan Murray and the athlete from Denmark Frederick Nielsen. Both tennis players won Wimbledon for the first time; in their interviews, both hope for continued cooperation. With a score of 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6, 6: 7, 6: 3, they managed to defeat another mixed national team consisting of Robert Lindstedt (Sweden) and Horia Tezeu (Romania).
The winners of the mixed tournament were representatives of America Lisa Raymond and Mike Brian, who in the final defeated Elena Vesnina from Russia and Leander Paes from India. All finals were shown live on Russian sports TV channels (Eurosport, "Russia 2").
