In the United States, on the eve of the London Olympics, a serious scandal erupted. The reason was the uniform for the American Olympic team, which, as it turned out, was made in China.
The development of a new uniform for the American Olympians was entrusted to the well-known US clothing manufacturer - Ralph Lauren. The company decided to use China's cheap labor to sew the uniform. This fact greatly outraged American senators and congressmen. The leader of the Democratic Majority in the US Senator Harry Reid said that now it is necessary to develop the textile industry and create new jobs in America, and the American Olympic Committee should be ashamed of such a rash decision. Combining all of the above, Harry Reid proposed to burn the Olympic uniforms made in China.
In response to the accusations, the American Olympic Committee explained that cheap labor was used solely to reduce the cost of clothing, because it should be available not only for athletes. The uniform has already gone on mass sale in the United States, and anyone can purchase a complete set of clothing for themselves, like the members of the Olympic team. If this form were produced in the USA, then its cost would be much higher. The committee also stressed that they are pleased with the cooperation with Ralph Lauren, and reminded that the US Olympic team is provided not at the expense of the state, but at the expense of private investors.
The athletes themselves were satisfied with the new uniform and do not support the concerns of the parliamentarians. Olympic champion Todd Rogers, who won gold in beach volleyball at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, said: "I think parliamentarians have many other important questions besides thinking about where Ralph Lauren made the clothes."
In the new uniform, the members of the US Olympic team are due to appear at the opening ceremony of the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London on July 27, 2012.
