Grappling is a type of martial arts that does not involve striking. Refers to "smart" sports, where the emphasis is on tactical skills and abilities. The direction has appeared recently, but has already become popular in different age and weight groups.
Grappling is a popular type of combat sports in Russia that combines techniques from other wrestling disciplines with minimal restrictions on the use of painful and suffocating techniques. This direction does not involve striking or using any weapons. In another way, this sport is called "chess over the tatami".
Grappling history
In this type of wrestling, all events take place in the stalls. The fighter must have a calculating mind and cunning. Otherwise, he will not be able to defeat his opponent. The founder of the direction is Sheikh Tahnun Bin Zayed Al Nahiyana from the UAE. He closely studied the direction of the fight, learned the skills of self-defense without weapons.
He was also fond of other martial arts. Every time he heard from his mentors why their system is superior to the rest. However, it was only possible to verify the correctness of the teachers only with the help of a duel. So the idea arose to create a list of limited rules and organize a fight where the effectiveness of the methods could be proven without the use of hard or fatal blows.
The first official tournament was held only in 1998. In it, athletes had to prove the effectiveness of their methodology without striking. Today the number of fans of this sport is growing. There are several of the largest organizations located in different parts of the planet.
Peculiarities
Unlike many other types of wrestling, in grappling, victory depends not so much on physical fitness as on the athlete's technical arsenal. During training, a sense of balance, the distribution of their own weight, develops. At the same time, a person's thinking should be open all the time for a quick and clear reaction to the actions of the second participant.
This is not to say that this is a beautiful sport. Spectators often watch tactical wrestling in a prone position. The trademark throw that characterizes this sport is the take down. This is the usual knocking down of the opponent and putting the fight into a horizontal position.
This approach is used very often, which is explained by athletes by simplicity and reliability. Difficult throws are not successful on the first try. After occupying a dominant position, a painful or suffocating hold is performed. The latter include air and blood, when the opponent's carotid artery is squeezed.
Allowed are:
- locks, wrists, levers;
- strangulation;
- impact on the ankle and legs.
Prohibited techniques include:
- impact on the face;
- bites;
- grabbing thumbs and other fingers and toes;
- hair pulling;
- hook with fingers;
- effects on the ears and some others.
What are the training sessions?
An integral part is a compression T-shirt with long or short sleeves. It is comfortable for athletes due to its airtightness and drying speed. Despite the fact that it is made of synthetic fabric, it has a rather high price.
Shorts should be short and comfortable. Types that are sewn specifically for sambo or other sports can be used. Sometimes a freestyle wrestling uniform is used instead of a T-shirt and shorts. During training, shoes are not used, and items of clothing should not have extraneous stripes, pockets and other elements made of metal and plastic.
Advantages
The greatest strength of grappling is its relationship to smart sports. To win, you need not only excellent physical shape and brute strength, but also the ability to confuse the second fighter and force him to make a mistake.
The benefits include development:
- speed;
- flexibility;
- plastics of movement.
Fighters learn to control their bodies, feel balance and correctly distribute weight during a fight. At the same time, they must always remain collected, ready for any unexpected moves from the opponent's side.
In conclusion, we note: anyone can engage in this type of martial arts. Physical fitness and age have almost no effect. Training results appear almost immediately. There is an increase in strength, endurance, improvement in physical and mental condition. When working out tactics, a person can cope in the future with almost any martial arts techniques.
