Instructions

Step 1

It's worth starting with a qualifying tournament held under the auspices of CONMEBOL (CONFEDERATION OF SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL). The confederation has only 10 members. Brazil, as host of the 2014 World Cup, does not participate in the qualifiers. The remaining 9 teams organize one group and play two matches with each other: home and away, a total of 16 games. According to the results of 16 rounds, the teams that took from the first to the fourth place are determined, they go directly to the World Cup. The fifth-placed team participates in the play-offs with the representative of the AFC zone. Based on all this, the Argentine national team, the Colombian national team, the Chile national team and the Ecuador national team have already made their way to the World Cup. The Uruguay national team, which will compete with the Jordan national team, got into the play-offs.

Step 2

Things are much more complicated in Central and North America. The qualifying tournament is held under the auspices of CONCACAF (the confederation of football for North and Central America and the Caribbean), which includes 35 members, including representatives from South America: Guyana, Suriname and Guiana. Since the level of football in all countries is radically different, there is simply no point in organizing a full-fledged selection with the participation of all national teams. For example, the national teams of Anguilla and Montserrat do not even have their own stadiums capable of hosting games of this level. Therefore, the selection takes place in four stages.

Step 3

At the first stage, 10 teams play against each other, occupying the worst positions in the FIFA rating at the time of the draw. Matches are played immediately on departure: at home and away. The winners advance to the second stage. They are joined by the following 19 teams from the FIFA rankings. Together they form 6 groups of 4 teams each. In this qualifying cycle, the Bahamas national team was forced to withdraw in the second stage, its stadium was not ready properly. At this stage, the selection is the toughest: only the winners of their groups, 6 teams in total, go to the next round.

Step 4

In the third round, the best rated teams are included in the fight, there are only 6 of them, like the winners of the second round, together they form 3 groups of four teams in each. then play in a round robin system. The group winner and the runner-up team advance to the final, fourth stage of selection.

At the fourth stage, the participants of the World Championship are determined. Six teams play each other at home and away, 10 games in total. According to the results of these matches, the teams that took from the first to the third place are determined, they go to the World Championship directly. The fourth-placed team will advance to the play-offs where they will face off from Oceania. Thus, at the World Cup we will see the USA national team, the Costa Rica national team and the Honduras national team. The Mexican national team, which finished fourth in the final, will play against the New Zealand national team.
