Watching sports competitions, you can sometimes notice that athletes who did not have special prerequisites for victory, who lost at the initial stages or who were constantly hindered by injuries, suddenly suddenly win. At the same time, commentators often use the formulations "won on moral and strong-willed" or "won on character."
In general, there is no one kind of character that would guarantee a person sports achievements. The orientation of the personality, interests are important (one begins to play sports without having prerequisites, and the other with naturally good qualities dreams of a career as an artist or a clown), the main driving motives (for some it is money, for someone - fame, for others - honor countries, the desire to prove something or get recognition from individuals, etc.), the conditions of upbringing and many other factors. There are only a few character traits that help a person become successful in sports.
From dream to goal
The main dream of a professional athlete is the recognition of his merits, and this recognition is either an Olympic medal, if the sport is Olympic, or a victory at the world championship, or a champion belt, or some other award. At the same time, the athlete must be able to transform his dream into a goal. It is the goal that he will set for himself that will not allow him to surrender at a difficult moment, rise when falling and continue to conquer sports peaks.
If there is a goal, persistence and perseverance appear in achieving it. It is impossible to overcome the most difficult periods in training without perseverance. If a person, barely feeling tired, quits classes, he will never become a winner. The winners are determined not only and not so much by talent or initial physical qualities, but precisely by persistence in striving for the goal. This tenacity is often referred to as toughness.
Traits
Scientists identify several groups of character traits that can determine future success or hinder it.
The first group combines features associated with the attitude towards people around: justice, honesty, nobility, responsiveness, politeness, etc. If it seems that a person with these traits is ideal and unreal, this is not correct. In sports of the highest achievements, they really want only honest victories, fair refereeing, and the noble deeds and responsiveness of athletes is manifested even at a distance, during a fight or a match. These personality traits may differ slightly between single athletes and athletes on a team.
Another group of traits is associated with self-reliance: self-confidence, exactingness, self-esteem, self-esteem, modesty. The latter quality does not seem to be inherent in some athletes, but really great people are usually modest, and those who get into the news with or without reason cannot always be called successful athletes. Usually they get fame not for sporting achievements, but for some other reason.
Other features include attitudes towards work: responsibility, discipline, hard work, initiative. In some sports (for example, rhythmic gymnastics, sports dancing, team games), a creative component in relation to work, creativity, the ability to come up with something new is still important. In relation to things, athletes are usually careful and thrifty.
The last distinguished group of traits is associated with the attitude to obstacles: decisiveness, independence, perseverance and self-control. Moreover, self-control and self-control in various sports should also be used in different ways: in shooting, for example, you need to keep calm and not give out emotions, in volleyball, basketball and other team games it is important to “start” and “turn on” the rest in time, in running for short distances, it is important to get to the start at the peak of emotions, etc.
Probably, no profession has a universal description of all its representatives, and athletes are no exception. Someone can be helped by aggressiveness, especially in martial arts, for others the defining quality is ambition, which helps to overcome all obstacles on the way to the goal, for others it is important to overcome oneself and gain new experience, envy helps some individuals to achieve success in sports. Even negative traits can be turned to your advantage, the main thing is to want to win!
