The Biathlon World Championships are international competitions that include performances in several disciplines. This is an individual race, sprint, pursuit, mixed relay and mass start. Participants of the championship have the opportunity to receive points that go to the overall World Cup standings and the Nations Cup standings. Taking part in a tournament of this level is very prestigious for any biathlete.

It should be noted that during the years of the Winter Olympic Games, the biathlon world championships are not held. Medals of competitions in those disciplines that are not included in the Olympic program are drawn at one of the stages of the World Cup.

The next biathlon world championship will be held on February 6-17, 2013 in the Czech Republic. This time the biathletes will be hosted by the town of Nove Mesto (Nove Mnesto or "New Town"), which in 2012 was already at the center of sporting events. One of the stages of the Biathlon World Cup was held there, which left a lot of impressions for fans and athletes.

Nove Mesto is a cozy and picturesque Czech town with a population of only 28 thousand people, leading its history from the time of Charles IV, who united a number of large settlements. In part, it justifies its name, since the biathlon world championships were not held here earlier. But the participants in the lower-ranked competitions - the IBU Cup and the World Cup - already had the opportunity to assess the quality of the Czech track.

The famous Russian biathlete Olga Zaitseva in an interview with RIA Novosti spoke with respect about the track in Nove Mesto, calling it interesting and difficult. Athletes call such trails "working", when descents constantly alternate with ascents, leaving no room for relaxation and rest. The organizers of the international competitions promise that in the coming season they will do everything to ensure that the pre-Olympic world championship is held at the highest organizational level.
