The Olympic Games not only increase the country's prestige among other states, but also lead to large financial costs. Despite this, all countries consider it an honor to welcome the Olympic flame and do not skimp on organizing this great sporting event.
The most expensive games took place in Beijing in 2008. Then they cost China $ 40 billion. It is noteworthy that this amount did absolutely no damage to the Chinese economy - there is enough capital in the country to build new metro lines, sports facilities and make the Olympic Games successful.
Before this sporting event in China, tax revenues increased by 20-30 percent, while the budget deficit at that time fell from 3% (2002) to 1% (2007). It is noteworthy that only 20% of the total amount was spent on the construction of the Olympic projects. The rest was invested in long-term infrastructure. One facility, for example, was donated to the Beijing University of Science and Technology.
The 1976 competition held in Montreal is considered another expensive game. The XXI Olympic Games cost the state $ 20 billion. Moreover, it took the country 30 years to pay off such a huge debt. Until the end of the twentieth century, Canada introduced a 20% tax on the sale of tobacco products.
It is worth noting that such a huge amount was well spent - the Montreal Olympics has become one of the exciting and colorful spectacles for millions of people from all over the world. Just the arrival of the fire from Athens to Canada was worth it - it was done with the help of a laser launched from a space satellite. And from Ottawa to Montreal, it was carried by 500 athletes, each of whom covered a distance of a kilometer. In the sports arena, two huge screens were installed, broadcasting the competition with slow-motion replays of interesting moments, and the highest leaning tower was erected at the Olympic stadium.
Interestingly, the entire royal family of England was present at the opening ceremony, and the daughter of Elizabeth II, Anna, took part in equestrian competitions. Also, this Olympics was remembered by the fact that the hosts of the competition for the first time in the history of the games did not win a single gold medal. The Canadian team had only 5 silver medals and 6 bronze medals.
