For the second time in history, the Olympic Games will be held in Russia. For the first time this major sporting event was held in the summer of 1980 in Moscow, and now Sochi will meet the Winter Olympics. The first new slopes, built specifically for this event, were tested by skiers at the competitions held in Krasnaya Polyana in winter 2012. Exactly 2 years before the Olympic flame is lit in the main sports arena.
The date of the XXII Winter Olympic Games is already known. Scheduled to open at 7 and close on 22 February 2014. During these days, 98 sets of medals will be played in 15 sports disciplines. Almost immediately after the Olympic Games, at the same sports facilities from March 7 to 16, 2014, the traditional Paralympic Games will be held, in which disabled athletes take part.
The Sochi Olympics will be held at two venues. Those sports competitions that take place in the open air will be hosted by the famous ski resort "Krasnaya Polyana", located 50 km from the city, in the mountains. Now a mountain Olympic village, a large ski complex "Rosa Khutor" and a toboggan track "Rzhanaya Polyana", where bobsledders will compete, are being built here.
In Sochi itself, indoor ice arenas, small and large, a speed skating center, an arena for curling competitions, an ice sports palace, which will host figure skating and short track competitions, with a capacity of 12 thousand fans, are being built. In addition, the construction of the main Olympic stadium, designed for 40 thousand spectators, and the Olympic village, in which athletes and the press will live, are almost completed. It is expected that about 12 thousand journalists will be accredited for the Games. According to construction plans, all facilities should be completed by 2013.
Television broadcasts from the Olympic Sochi competitions will be watched by about 3 billion viewers around the world, but those wishing to see this unforgettable show with their own eyes have the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance.
The implementation of a unique project for the Olympic Games in Sochi will allow the development and implementation of the most modern standards and technological solutions. A comprehensive program of continuous Olympic education, a system of high environmental standards, an interactive educational program for a wide Internet audience, which provides users with accessible information about the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, is already in operation.
