Russia in this type of program was represented by two girls - Yulia Lipnitskaya and Adelina Sotnikova, who performed in the final warm-up.
Russian fans pinned great hopes on the young Yulia Lipnitskaya, who had already become an Olympic champion thanks to team competitions. Julia really worked out her programs flawlessly and helped the team to get the maximum number of points.
It can be seen that the excitement and active influence of the media did not reflect in the best way on Lipnitskaya's skating. It is clear that tremendous pressure was exerted on the 15-year-old athlete. As a result, she was unable to cope with her nerves, and, unfortunately, fell during her performance in the short program.
An offensive fall on a triple flip cost Yulia Lipnitskaya almost ten points. According to the results of the short program, the athlete was able to take only fifth place. But nevertheless, the chances for a medal are not yet lost. In addition, a very strong rival from Japan, Mao Asada, fell out of the fight, and she also fell while performing a jump of three and a half turns.
The second Russian figure skater, Adelina Sotnikova, was able to cope with her nerves and skated her short program flawlessly, gaining 74.64 points. She was only slightly behind the representative from South Korea Kim Yoo-Na (74, 92 points). The preliminary third place is taken by the Italian, multiple world and European champion, Carolina Costner (74, 12 points).
