Sebastian Buemi, who won alongside Alonso and Nakajima in the 2018/2019 World Endurance Championship (WEC), revealed that he spoke with the Spaniard about moving to Formula E.
After years of fully concentrating on royal races, Alonso began racing in other championships in 2017, from the Indy500 to endurance racing, and even tested it behind the wheel of NASCAR cars and the Dakar Rally Raid.
The Spaniard emphasizes that he wants to be the most versatile racer in the world - now that he has achieved everything he wanted in the highest category of motorsport and collects triumphs in such legendary races as Le Mans or Daytona, he is ready for any experiment.
Until Alonso announced his plans for next season. In addition to the possible participation in rally-raids in order to prepare for the next Dakar, there are many opportunities, starting with the DTM, where he has already been offered an offer. But there are other categories that the Asturian might be interested in.
His WEC team-mate Sebastian Buemi, who won the World Endurance Championship with Fernando and Kazuki Nakajima, said Formula E, where he races, is one option.
“We talked about many different things, and we also discussed Formula E. Fernando has a few more goals in front of him that he wants to achieve in his career, and if you come to Formula E, it is a compromise, because it is a full season, which means that it will be very difficult to combine this series with anything else,”said Buemi.
However, the Nissan driver admits that it is difficult for the Spaniard to make a decision regarding participation in the electric championship: “He has a positive attitude towards the idea, he talks about it, but from now until he can be seen in a Formula E car, there is still a long way to go, and I don't know what he will decide in the future."
In 2017, Alonso was already asked about Formula E, but he said that he was not interested in it … at that time.
“Maybe someday I'll be a little more interested, but now I have no opinion on this episode,” he said then.
Buemi described how he worked alongside Alonso at Toyota Gazoo Racing and admitted that he would miss the Spaniard: “It was actually very easy. I already knew Alonso before, of course, I expected to see something different, but in the end I was very happy with the way it all happened. Of course, we won Le Mans twice and made our dream come true.
It will be sad that he will not be in the car at Silverstone during the first race of the next WEC season."
According to the provisions of the FIA charter, any change to the F1 sports regulations for 2020 can now be adopted only with the unanimous agreement of all teams.
Changes to the International Sporting Code (ISC) can be even more complex as it is followed by all FIA-sponsored races and therefore cannot only be concerned with Formula 1.
Masse added: “I think if all the teams agree with this, then it is no different from any other regulation. But there is also the ISC, which has regulations that also set the rules for the driver's behavior while driving. There is a procedure for changing it, which affects not only Formula 1, but also the whole motorsport. But this is exactly what we will decide and consider together."
Masse noted that it is very likely that this issue will be discussed at a meeting of the F1 sports working group.
