All ski ointments are divided into 2 types - slip ointments or paraffins and retention ointments. The former allow you to glide better in the snow, while the latter increase the friction and prevent the skis from slipping as you move through the snow.

By consistency, ointments are divided into solid (for cold weather) and liquid (for warm weather). Amateurs use solid ointments, while professionals usually choose liquid ones.

Plastic skis are usually lubricated with retention ointments in the area of the boot attachment, because this type of ski has good glide. Plastic skis are rarely lubricated with ointments for sliding.

Slip ointments rub the toe and the very end of the ski, and with retention ointment the middle zone of the skis. This is for those who prefer the classic move. For skating, skis are rubbed with sliding ointments entirely. During the day, the temperature on the track can change, so it is advisable to take ointments for temperature ranges adjacent to each other. When skis slip, their lubrication zone is increased, shifting it slightly forward. The ointment is enough for an interval of 5 to 10 km, after which it is necessary to re-smear the skis.
