The profession of football manager was born in the distant past, when football became a mass sport. Then professional football teams appeared, as well as the need to free football players from communicating with clubs and associations, to solve technical issues for them. Thanks to this, the players focused exclusively on training and preparing for matches.

Over time, managers began to make decisions on the team's participation in certain competitions, on the search for sponsors, on the purchase of equipment from one manufacturer or another, on advertising contracts, on public appearances and interviews in newspapers and on television. A division of labor has emerged: coaches train, athletes prepare for matches, and all other issues are decided by the manager.

In the 20th century, managers were coaches and athletes who ended their football careers. It was they, like no one else, who knew the whole inner side of football and were able to resolve issues taking into account the interests of football players. In the USSR, the role of managers was often assumed by the former curators of the central clubs CSKA or Spartak, who had accumulated a wealth of personal experience in their field. They often combined coaching with organizational management, even though their job descriptions did not provide for this.

In the 80s, in order to be a successful manager in the world of sports football, serious professional knowledge began to be required, so professionals began to be trained in serious educational institutions. The position of football manager has become the theory and practice of managing a football organization under market conditions.

Nowadays, professional, and partly amateur football has come to a level where even a super successful team cannot win alone. Many people work to win the team, and their work often goes unnoticed. These are the people managers are, they are the ones who lead all the staff, leading the team to victory.

Typically, managers within an organization are divided into top managers and executive managers. Top managers are heads of Olympic committees, directors of sports complexes, presidents of football teams, leagues and federations. Executive managers are heads of departments, divisions, departments. Below them are various service personnel - trainers, psychologists, medical workers.
