Step 1

Who are your favorites?

PwC decided to calculate how many gold medals Russia can win at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. So, this year our country has a good chance to perform with dignity and collect a record number of awards. If we talk about the closest rivals, these are, of course, the national teams of Austria, Norway, Canada, Germany, and, of course, the US team.

Step 2

How was it calculated?

PwC's forecasts for the Sochi Olympics are based on economic simulations. Its essence is in testing the historical correlation between such criteria as socio-economic parameters, and also the number of medals that athletes won at the last Games are taken into account.

Determining how successful the performance of a country will become, the state of the economy is taken into account, in particular, the indicator of total GDP. In addition to this, the climate is becoming an important factor, namely the presence of snow and how many ski resorts there are per capita. These two criteria have a significant impact on how many medals a country won at the Games.

Step 3

Who will collect the most medals?

PwC research reports that developed countries with the right climate to practice and develop winter sports are at the very top in the predicted medal standings. On the other hand, countries such as Norway and Austria clearly demonstrate that a small economy is not an obstacle for a successful performance at the Games. PwC analysts are confident that Austria and Norway will collect more medals than, for example, France and China.

So, the medal forecast of PwC specialists is as follows: Americans will collect the most medals. Germany is in second place, our compatriots are in third. The fourth on this list are Canadians, followed by Austria and Norway. The Chinese are only seventh in this list, followed by Switzerland, Sweden, and South Korea closes the top ten.

Well, let's hope that when the Olympics start, the Russian team will do everything possible and impossible to show the best result.
