In the last decade of the last century, five Olympiads took place - two summer and three winter. During this period, the collapse of the Soviet Union finally took shape, and the newly formed states, including Russia, began to take part in the Olympic Games. There was a reorganization in the schedule of the Olympic Games - the winter and summer Olympiads were spread over different years.

In 1992, the winter and summer pitchfork competitions were last held in the same year. The Summer Games were then held in Spain's second largest city, Barcelona. That year, the former states of the Soviet Union played for the only time in the team that was named so - the "United Team". In Barcelona, she was able to win the largest total number of awards, ahead of everyone in the number of gold and silver medals.

In the winter of 1992, the Olympians met in a neighboring country - the 16th Winter Games were held in Albertville, France. And there the "United Team" performed successfully, but Germany was still the first in the number of awards. In total, 57 sets of medals in 7 winter sports were played in France, for which 1801 athletes from 64 countries competed.

Due to the decision to make the time interval between the winter and summer games equal to two years, the next winter Olympiad took place not four years later, but two years later. It took place in the Norwegian Lillehammer in 1994 and was the first where the Russian national team participated independently, without entering any associations. The debut turned out to be very successful - our athletes were ahead of everyone in the quality of the awards won, losing only three medals to the home team.

The next two Olympiads of the decade took place outside Europe. The XXVI Summer Olympic Games were held in 1996 in the USA, in Atlanta. 271 sets of medals in 26 sports were played among more than ten thousand athletes from 197 countries. The Olympic flame was lit by Mohammed Ali before the start of the competition, and Bill Clinton announced the official opening of the games at a solemn ceremony. The Americans received significantly more awards at these competitions than any other team - 101 (Germany - 65, Russia - 63). The organization of this Olympiad has come under heavy criticism due to transport problems and excessive commercialization.

In 1998, the XVIII Winter Olympic Games were held in the city of Nagano on the Japanese island of Honshu. By the final games of the nineties, the number of winter Olympic sports had increased to 14. 68 sets of awards were played in them, the largest number of which went to German athletes - 29 medals.
