What are the criteria for choosing a city for the Olympic Games?

The applicant city must submit an application for the Olympics to the International Olympic Committee at least 10 years before the proposed year of the sporting event. Voting for this or that candidate is carried out 7 years before the event. The selection is carried out by secret questioning of the members of the selection committee.

The application submitted for consideration is a kind of advertising brochure. Naturally, outwardly, it does not at all look like those booklets and leaflets that can be found in various stores. An application to host the Olympics is a complex project, which must describe both the technical capabilities that a given city has and its material base. It also indicates how much government support will be provided to this city. The entire project should be drawn up in sufficient detail, with attachments and photographs. The commission, which has never visited the candidate city before, should immediately visualize it and understand whether it is really suitable for hosting the Olympic Games.

Documents confirming the financial obligations of the city in terms of servicing the Olympics must also be attached.

The basic criteria that are presented to an applicant to host the Olympic Games are as follows. The city must necessarily be quite popular in its country, have an appropriate climate for those games that are planned to be held in it - summer or winter, have a fairly developed infrastructure, be spacious or have large territories around that allow you to deploy the Olympic construction site. State support for this subject is also of no small importance.

After considering the application, the evaluation commission of the International Olympic Committee travels to those cities that want to become organizers of sports competitions, and on the spot assesses everything that is described in the application. For each applicant, IOC members must draw up detailed written reports with their comments, which will then be taken into account when voting.

Based on all the documents submitted and the personal assessment of all members of the evaluation committee, a list of those cities that will become contenders for the title of the Olympic Capital is drawn up. However, there should be only one winner.

As soon as a particular city is approved as an organizer, the International Olympic Committee concludes a written agreement with it, which will be positioned as an agreement for the provision of services for the conduct of sports competitions. From this moment, the host city can begin to prepare for the meeting of athletes. After all, he has for everything - the construction of sports facilities, and the reorganization of infrastructure, and the construction of the so-called "Olympic village" - has a whole 7 years.
