Lazio is a football club in Rome, named after one of the Italian regions. In 1999, the club became the last winner of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in the history of the tournament.
About the creation of "Lazio"
Club "Lazio" was founded in the capital of Italy, Rome on January 9, 1900 as a universal sports club (that is, focused not only on football, but also other sports - today there are 48 disciplines in total). The founder of the sports association was Luigi Bijarelli. According to his plan, the name of the newly created club was to show that it is not only a capital city. That is why the name "Lazio" was taken - after the name of the Italian region in which Rome is located.
A year later, in 1901, the football team itself was organized by the Frenchman Bruno Seghettini as part of Lazio.
To honor the homeland of the Olympic Games, the club's founders chose the colors of the Greek flag - white and sky blue - as their signature colors. Alas, this did not play into the hands of the fate of the club and its reputation in the eyes of compatriots. Relations between Italy and Greece at that time were very tense, so that many Italians disliked Lazio, many even accused Bijarelli of lack of patriotism and almost betrayal.
In 1913, the Latsiale took part in the national football championship for the first time - and immediately reached the final of the competition.
Since 1930, the football club has been admitted to Serie A. For most of their career, Lazio has been one of the leaders in the series.
Serie A is the top football division in Italy.
Club achievements
Twice the club's players became the winners of the national championship of the country - in 1979 and in 2000, six times they received the Italian Cup and three times - the Italian Super Cup. The most "star" year for Laziale was 1999, when the players managed to win not only the UEFA Super Cup, but also became the last winners of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in the history of the tournament.
The 2000s were not very successful for the sports club. In 2002, the Cirio concern, which was the main sponsor of the club, went bankrupt. The team had to part with a number of brilliant footballers, including Alessandro Nesta, Marcelo Salas, Fabrizio Ravanelli, Karel Poborski and others. The team was close to extinction.
To date, the last winning trophy in the Lazio club museum is the Italian Super Cup of the 2009-2010 season.
The new president of the club, Claudio Lotito, managed to save Lazio. In 2006, Latsiale won the right to participate in the UEFA Cup, and in the following season they made their way to the Champions League.
