Step 1

To remove the old rear derailleur, loosen the cable bolt and remove the cable. Then unscrew the derailleur rollers or remove the chain from the bike. Having unscrewed the bolt of fastening of the switch itself, remove it.

Step 2

To install the rear derailleur, screw it to the mounting point. Pull the switch back when tightening the mounting screw to avoid damaging the upper roller relative to the cassette screw. Then screw in the adjusting knobs on the switch and on the shifter until they stop and unscrew exactly 1 turn. Tighten the drive cable, place it in the groove and secure with the mounting bolt.

Step 3

After installing the rear derailleur, it must be adjusted. The adjustment is carried out with the control cable fastening bolt, the control cable tension adjustment screw, the high and low gear limit screws, the upper roller position adjustment screw relative to the sprockets. The tension on the control cable can be adjusted using a lug on the shifter. Some derailleurs may not have all adjustments, and Simano derailleurs are additionally equipped with a parallelogram spring tension adjustment screw.

Step 4

Before adjusting, loosen the control cable with the adjusting screw or boss on the shifter. Place the chain on the smallest sprocket. Turning the top gear stop screw, set the frame with the rollers so that the plane of the rollers exactly coincides with the plane of the small sprocket. Then place the chain on the largest sprocket. Likewise, by turning the low gear stop screw, achieve an exact alignment of the planes of the large sprocket and the rollers.

Step 5

Place the chain on the smallest sprocket in the front and the largest in the back. Turning the screw for adjusting the position of the rollers, make sure that when pedaling backwards, the roller does not touch the teeth of the large sprocket and there is a 3-5 mm gap between them. Try shifting gears by pedaling your bike with your hand. If the chain has difficulty moving from large to small sprockets, loosen the control cable with the adjusting pin. Once you get a crisp derailleur, try the power shift by cycling. Make additional adjustments if necessary.

Step 6

If the adjustment fails, check the freedom of movement of the control cable. If it sticks, clean and lubricate it. If it has broken wires, replace it. Check the alignment of the chain tensioner plane and the plane of the sprockets. If they do not match, straighten the speed switch mounting bracket. Make sure there is no play in the rollers. The backlash at the end of the chain tensioner frame in the transverse direction should not exceed 3-4 mm.
