From 9 to 25 February 2018, the XXIII Winter Olympics will be held in the Korean city of Pyeongchang. It will feature 15 sports disciplines from 7 traditional winter sports. Compared to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the number of sets of awards to be played has remained unchanged.

Step 1
3 sets of medals will be played in bobsleigh competition. It is believed that this sport was invented in Switzerland at the end of the 19th century. Initially, a team of three men and two women was supposed to go down the sleigh. Subsequently, the crews consisted of 2, 4, 5 or 8 people. In Austria, bobsleigh competitions began in 1908, and in Germany two years later. Bobsleigh World Championships have been held since 1924. In the same year, this sport was included in the program of the Winter Olympic Games.
Step 2
2 sets of awards at the Pyeongchang Olympics will be played in the skeleton. Athletes will have to go down the ice chute several times in a special sleigh, trying to show the best time. The story goes that the skeleton dates back to the 16th century. Then the Indians of Canada descended from the mountains on toboggans - wooden sleighs without runners. As a sport, the skeleton took shape in the middle of the 19th century, when British tourists began to compete who would go down the slope of the Alpine mountains faster in a sleigh. For the first time at the Olympic Games, the skeleton was presented in 1928, then in 1948. Such a large gap is due to the presence of only one specialized track in the world. The third time Olympic skeleton competitions were held in 2002. Since then, this sport has become traditional.
Step 3
Biathletes around the world will have to dismantle 11 sets of medals in 2018. Ski hunting was traditional for the population of many northern countries. It began to be perceived as a sports competition in the 18th century. The ancestor of biathlon was the military patrol competition, which in many ways resembled the modern team race. At the Olympic Games, such a competition first appeared in 1924 as a demonstration. After 1948, the military patrol competition was excluded from the program, returning it already in a new capacity as biathlon in 1960.
Step 4
There will be two sets of awards in curling: one for the women's teams and one for the men's. The essence of the game is to deliver the granite stone to the target on the ice as accurately as possible using brushes. The team whose projectile is closer to the center of the target wins. Curling was played in the 16th century in Scotland. The rules of the game were formulated in the 19th century. At the 1924 Olympics, curling was introduced as a demonstration sport. He entered the standard Olympic program only in 1998.
Step 5
In speed skating, 12 sets of awards will be played: 6 in the competition among men and the same in the competition among women. Speed skating is one of the oldest sports represented at the Winter Olympics, since it has been included in the main program of all past Olympics, since 1924. Skating at speed began in the 17th century, and the first official competitions were held in 1763 in Great Britain. Then the winner covered the distance of 15 miles in 46 minutes. Competitions now include races of 500, 1000, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters, as well as a team pursuit race.
Step 6
8 sets of awards will be played in short track speed skating competitions, where athletes will have to move as quickly as possible along an oval ice track. The Olympic program includes races of 500, 1000 and 1500 meters (for both women and men), a relay race of 3000 meters for women and 5000 meters for men.
Step 7
Figure skating will traditionally be one of the most spectacular competitions at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Athletes will compete for 5 sets of awards: in women's and men's single skating, pair skating, dancing and team competition. Figure skating was recognized as an independent sport in 1871. Since 1924, it has been included in the program of the Olympic Games.
Step 8
In ski sports, 49 sets of awards will be played:
- 10 sets of medals in alpine skiing;
- 3 sets of medals in ski nordic combination;
- 12 sets of medals in cross-country skiing;
- 4 sets of medals in ski jumping;
- 10 sets of medals in freestyle;
- 10 sets of medals in snowboarding.
Step 9
4 sets of awards will be examined by luge athletes. These competitions were included in the Olympic program in 1964. Since 2014, the team relay has been added to the competitions in men's single sleds, women's single sleds, and men's double sleds.
Step 10
2 sets of medals will be played in ice hockey. For the first time, ice hockey competitions were held in 1920 at the Summer Olympics. Since 1924, this game has been part of the Winter Olympics program. Women's ice hockey became an Olympic sport in 1998.
