The Winter Olympic Games in Sochi have been declared closed, now we can sum up the results.
One of the most ambitious Olympic Games has come to an end. During the event, the city of Sochi was able to receive more than 140 thousand guests. More than twenty thousand volunteers helped in the maintenance of this event. More than half a billion people from all over the world were able to watch live broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies. In total, more than three million tickets have been sold for all types of competitions.
The five winning countries that were able to collect the maximum number of medals included Russia, Norway, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands. After the first week of the competition, no one could have imagined that the Russian team would be able to come out on top in the unofficial but prestigious medal rating. So, the Russian national team was able to win 33 medals, of which 13 were of the highest dignity. It turned out to be a real triumph for Russian athletes, because so many awards have not been won since the days of the Soviet Union.
Unfortunately, some of the predictions for victories did not come true. Thus, Russian fans were counting on more medals in speed skating, biathlon and cross-country skiing. It was also a shame for the men's single skating, when the only representative of Russia withdrew from the competition a few minutes before the start. The hockey team was also upset, as it could not even make it to the semifinals. But no one expected gold medals in short track speed skating and snowboarding.
I was also pleased that this time Russian athletes were not caught on doping. Unfortunately, at this Olympics there were doping precedents with Olympians from other countries. But, summing up, it can be noted that these games went down in history not only as the most ambitious, but also the most expensive.
