Sambo and judo are very similar, and an inexperienced observer can hardly tell them apart. What is the difference between these two types of martial arts?

The main differences between sambo and judo:

1. The appearance of athletes (uniform, equipment)

In sambo, the uniform assumes the presence of a sambovka (a special jacket of red or blue colors), a belt, short shorts, wrestlers (certain shoes), it is possible to use a bandage (to protect the groin of all participants), as well as a bra and a closed leotard for female athletes. In combat sambo, an athlete's uniform is complemented by a protective helmet and gloves (pads).

In judo, athletes compete barefoot. The form of clothing is judoga, it assumes the presence of a jacket, trousers and a belt of white or blue colors.

2. Commands given by the referee

In sambo, teams are usually given in Russian (in our country) or with whistles.

In judo, all commands are given in Japanese (hajime, ippon, waza-ari, etc.).

3. Sambo is not an Olympic sport.

4. The essence of sambo is to resist the strength of the opponent, the essence of judo is to succumb to the opponent in order to win.

The rest of the differences are very specific, and most likely will be invisible to the casual observer. Very often, due to the similarity of techniques and rules of wrestling, many athletes compete in each of these sports, and, as a rule, achieve good results. Therefore, do not be surprised when some of your familiar sambists also turn out to be a judoka.
