Passions run high not only on construction sites and sports arenas where future champions are being trained, but also on the sidelines. The commission determines who will represent Russia at the Games in Sochi.

Russian national team

The Olympic team of the Russian Federation is nothing more than 223 participants who can rightfully be considered one of the best representatives of the sports world today. After all, participation, and even more so a victory in such a holiday of sports as the Olympics, is perhaps the highest award for a country that has been honing its skills in such winter sports as bobsleigh, biathlon, skating, skiing, curling for four years, has persistently selected the leading masters of ski jumping, sledding, skeleton, gained momentum in snowboarding, freestyle and short track competitions and, of course, made every effort to educate the best masters of hockey and figure skating.

It should also be noted that 2014 was marked by the largest number of representatives of the Russian Federation team ever participating in competitions of this level in the entire history of our country's performance in these competitions. The young team (the average age of the participants is only 22 years old) includes 25 freestyle and hockey masters, twenty skiers and skaters specialists each.

Hero names

For many athletes, the Winter Olympics in Sochi will be their debut and, perhaps, a real breakthrough and the greatest opportunity to show their strength and skills. However, the competitions will also be attended by experienced and more eminent masters who have recently managed to win prestigious awards at various world-class competitions and consolidate their names on the world boards of honor. These are Albert Demchenko, a representative of the luge sport, who, by the way, will represent our country for the seventh time in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and Alexander Zubkov, who managed to show amazing results in bobsleigh competitions, and hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, and, of course, the best single skater Evgeni Plushenko.

Surprisingly, the team included athletes from Korea and America: the snowboarder Vic Wilde and the representative of such a sport as short track, Viktor Ahn, not only fell in love with Russia with all their hearts, but, having changed their citizenship, became full members of the newly assembled team.

Unfortunately, not all athletes managed to join the main composition of the Olympic team, some will have to wait for their turn in a kind of waiting list, starting to work only as a result of any force majeure circumstances, injuries or illnesses of members of the main team. However, the complete list of athletes has not been finally approved either, because the final stages of training and qualification are still ahead.
