The XIV Winter Olympic Games 1984 were held from 8 to 19 February in Sarajevo (Yugoslavia). They were attended by 1272 athletes (998 men and 274 women) from 49 countries. The official symbol of the Olympic Games was the Vuchko wolf cub.
The atmosphere during the Olympics was quite tense. The Cold War was to blame for this, affecting the relationship between athletes. The USSR national team at the games was accompanied by intelligence officers, who vigilantly watched the behavior and contacts of the athletes. Against the backdrop of disorganized relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, Americans increasingly began to lure Soviet coaches and athletes over to them. This helped to improve the training of the United States team, and just to annoy the ideological enemy also gave the US intelligence services a lot of pleasure.
The 1984 Olympics in Yugoslavia became a triumph for the GDR. East Germans received 9 gold medals, athletes of the USSR - only 6. Vladislav Tretyak carried the Soviet flag at the opening ceremony. Probably, this brought good luck to the hockey players of our national team, who took first place at the games.
The leader of the Olympics was the Swedish skier Gunde Svan, who won two gold, one silver and one bronze medals in the competition. His name is included in the Guinness Book of Records. Swann has been awarded the world title 11 times and won the Olympics 4 times.
The queen of the track was the Finnish athlete Marya Hamyalainen, who climbed to the highest step of the podium three times during the games. In men's singles skating, the American figure skater Scott Hamilton, who was distinguished by an unusually high speed of movement on ice, won the champion title.
In single figure skating for women, the gold went to the young Katharina Witt from the GDR. She was constantly surrounded by a crowd of journalists and fans. Witt was called the most sensual, elegant and sexy athlete of the Olympics. The bronze medal among singles went to the Soviet athlete Kira Ivanova. In ice dancing, the Englishmen Christopher Dean and Jane Torvill became champions.
The hockey tournament was very interesting. The USSR national team wanted to get even with the US team for the defeat at the last Olympics in Lake Placid. However, they failed to take revenge, the US team could not reach the final. In the final tournament, the most interesting were the meetings with the Canadians and Czechs. The team of the USSR defeated the Canadian national team with a score of 4: 0, in this game the goalkeeper Vladislav Tretyak showed himself excellently. He also shone in the meeting with the Czechs, which the Soviet athletes won with a score of 2: 0, winning gold medals.
